One of Stockholms hidden gems, Danderydsgatan built in 1924.

Stockholm is my favorite city in Europe. It’s filled with wonderful archipelago landscapes (Fjäderholmarna, Vaxholm, and Sandhamn have the most serene surroundings and swimming spots), exceptional historical landmarks (Gamla Stan, Drottningholm Palace, and the Vasa Museum), and dazzling natural beauty (Djurgården, Tyresta National Park, and Stockholm’s Archipelago are my favorites). The islands of the Stockholm Archipelago are perfectly scattered for island hopping and adventure, while the mainland of Stockholm is teeming with ancient architecture and lesser-known districts that will surprise and reward the unhurried traveler.

Frequently Asked Questions about Stockholm

Where is Stockholm?

Stockholm is situated in eastern Sweden, on the southeastern coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Stockholm has an area of over 70 square miles and is positioned in the famous Swedish archipelago with around 30 000 islands and islets in the Baltic Sea. The city of Stockholm is built up on 14 islands like Gamla Stan (Old Town), Djurgården, Södermalm, Norrmalm, Östermalm, Kungsholmen, and others. You should write these down because they will be important for keeping track of your location while traveling the city. Lake Mälaren flows along Stockholm and ends in the Baltic Sea. As the capital and largest city of Sweden, Stockholm is a vibrant crossroads of culture, technology, and design.

What is Stockholm known for?

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden and the historical heartland of the Vikings, drew unexpected attention from a notorious 1973 bank robbery where the hostages surprisingly developed emotional bonds with their captors. This incident led to the now-famous ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. For travelers, Stockholm is best known for its stunning archipelago, the medievel charm of Gamla Stan, and the Vasa Museum with its nearly fully intact 17th-century ship.

How expensive is Stockholm?

Stockholm, while leaning towards the pricier end of the scale it reflects the high standards of Scandinavian living. Dining at an inexpensive restaurant, could cost you between 100-200 Kronor ($11-$22). However, Stockholm’s public transport system, known as SL Access, helps to offset some costs. It not only navigates the city but also connects you to the breathtaking archipelago, parks, and swimming spots. If your stay extends beyond a weekend, consider investing in a Stockholm Pass. This offers free entry to over 60 attractions and could save you a fair bit. With careful budget planning, the unique charm and vibrant character of Stockholm are definitely worth every “Krona” spent.

What is the best month to go to Stockholm?

Stockholm is a delightful destination year-round, although the weather varies greatly across seasons. If you’re seeking warm weather and extended daylight, June through August is the ideal time to visit. During these summer months, the city buzzes with life, despite many residents departing for their summer houses. In contrast, the winter months of December through February bring a cozy, intimate atmosphere to the city. Many locals spend their time savoring hot coffee against the backdrop of the winter chill. From around December 24th, snow often settles Stockholm like a blanket, lingering until February, and sometimes even as late as April.

How many days in Stockholm?

The key highlights of Stockholm (the Archipelago, the Vasa Museum, and the medieval Gamla Stan) can be covered in one busy day, with great planning. However, to fully immerse yourself in all that Stockholm has to offer, I recommend at least three full days, or a week if time allows. This would cater to those interested in delving deeper than the ‘must-see’ attractions. Regardless of your stay’s length, consider a guided tour – an efficient way to soak in the city’s history, culture, and gastronomic scene within a limited timeframe.

Is Stockholm safe?

While concerns around crime in Sweden may be heightened due to media attention, rest assured, Stockholm remains a safe destination. The city is very pedestrian-friendly and well-lit, with plenty of people around. The primary concern for travelers, particularly in popular tourist areas like Gamla Stan, is pickpockets. Solo travelers, including women, should feel safe, provided normal precautions are taken.

What is the best area to stay in Stockholm?

The best neighborhoods to stay in Stockholm are Gamla Stan, Norrmalm, Östermalm, and Södermalm. Each of these districts is within walking distance of popular attractions, fantastic restaurants, and various shops. Södermalm has more of a creative spirit and boasts a range of indie boutiques, while Östermalm is the epitome of Swedish luxury in any shape and form.

How to get from Stockholm Airport to the city center?

Transitioning from Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport to the city center is generally straightforward, with several options available. Keep in mind that current reconstruction at the airport’s entrance might add a slight challenge to finding these options. Arlanda Express, a high-speed train takes you to the city center in just 20 minutes, departing every 15/30 minutes at a cost of 320 SEK. Alternatively, consider the more economical Flygbussarna Airport Coaches, which take about 50 minutes to reach the city center and costs 129 SEK. If you prefer a direct route, taxis are available, though fares can range from 500 to 700 SEK. Be cautious and agree on the price beforehand to avoid unscrupulous drivers. Another alternative that needs no pre-booking is SL public transport system, costing 132 SEK.
